A widowed television producer stages fake film auditions to meet an eligible woman. He selects Asami, a beautiful and enigmatic young woman who seems too perfect. Their romance blossoms, but unsettling details emerge—mysterious phone calls, unexplained absences, disturbing revelations. As obsession deepens, reality unravels into a nightmarish descent through intimate terror and degradation.

Trailer

Miike detonates j-horror's template by abandoning atmospheric restraint for a slow-burn thriller that weaponizes mundane social performance. Unlike Ring or Spiral, which trafficked in supernatural inevitability, Audition locates the real horror in romantic delusion and the predatory asymmetry of desire—the salaryman's fantasies collide with a woman's precise, articulate cruelty. The film's tonal whiplash between drawing-room politeness and industrial body-horror operates as formal argument: true dread doesn't require ghosts, only the willingness to watch a man's self-deception curdle into punishment. Miike's surgical framing strips away the genre's spectral vocabulary and replaces it with intimate, inescapable domestic space.
