Deodato's seminal found-footage work interrogates the violence of observation itself, collapsing the boundary between hunter and hunted.
Deodato's found-footage methodology predates Blair Witch by eighteen years, but the film weaponizes the format against cinema itself rather than using it simply as a realism tool. The archival footage isn't found evidence of supernatural horror—it's proof of a documentary crew's complicity in violence. That move, making the act of recording indistinguishable from the act of committing atrocity, grants the film a political dimension most found-footage horror franchises never attempted. The sub-genre learned the formal trick but abandoned the teeth.
