The Medium
A story about shamanism in Thailand.
An ordinary woman becomes possessed by an ancient spiritual entity, her existence spiraling into nightmare. As supernatural forces seize control of her body and mind, her family confronts terrible truths rooted in local cult traditions. The possession intensifies, unveiling forgotten rituals and a malevolence that transcends human understanding.
Pisanthanakun's film resists the austere palette that defined Thai supernatural horror in the prior decade. Instead, The Medium layers accumulated visual noise—cramped interiors, thermal video static, documentary-style handheld footage—until the aesthetic itself becomes hostile. Where J-horror templates rely on stillness and suggestion, this demon film commits to sensory assault and institutional chaos. The medium of capture (phone screens, livestream feeds) becomes the demon's vector; the film's refusal to clean up its visual language mirrors how possession corrupts the spaces it inhabits. This is demonic horror weaponizing the apparatus of documentation itself.
