One Missed Call
What will it sound like when you die?
A young woman discovers her friends are receiving missed calls from their own phone numbers, each predicting the exact moment of their death. When she becomes ensnared in the curse herself, she races to uncover the source of a supernatural phenomenon that transcends geography and technology. Each call rings in a countdown to oblivion.
Valette's American remake drains the original's core mechanism: the inexorable spread of dread through social proximity, the way each victim inherits the contamination from the last. Here the missed calls collapse into pure MacGuffin—narrative expedient rather than metaphysical trap. The film scrubs away the uncanny spatial grammar of its source: no haunted thresholds, no sense that the city itself is complicit. What remains is a standard Hollywood mechanics thriller, where rational explanation suffocates the lingering creep that made Takeshi Miike's version genuinely unmoored.
