Where folk horror typically shrouds ritual intent in misdirection and ambient dread, *Hereditary* treats demonic inheritance as clinical inheritance, literalising Freudian terror into painterly tableaux. Collette's performance dismantles the genre's dependence on ambiguity; you watch a mother become culpable without her consent. The film galvanised elevated horror discourse but fractured folk horror's compact with restraint.
